Scene 4 – Our Lady of Guadalupe

Scene 4 – Our Lady of Guadalupe

The Saint Andrew Parish “Journey to Jesus” makes a stop at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish at 91st and Brandon Ave on the far southeast side of Chicago. An appropriate place for them to visit on December 12, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This parish was known as the first parish in the city of Chicago established to serve Mexicans who had migrated to the city. In the early 1900s, the immigrants who migrated to Chicago often worked in low-paying jobs available in the steel mills.

Normally on December 12, the parish is busting with pilgrims and devotees who come to pray and ask for intercession from Our Lady of Guadalupe. This year however the three kings find themselves very much alone. There are no long lines awaiting to enter the church. They must look elsewhere.

The parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe also holds the National Shrine of St. Jude and it was the site of the baptism for Fr. Sergio, the pastor of Saint Andrew Parish.

Thank you God for all the immigrants who have brought their rich cultural traditions to our city and have made it a place of incredible diversity. May our city and country honor the dignity of all cultures and work on the fair and just reform of our immigration policies. May we recognize that Christ is present in all people. Amen.
