In a world that runs on convenience, fasting is out of step for many, even for us Catholics. If I have a need I fill it. If something is hard, I find and easier way. And is that bad in itself? Of course not! The point of Lent isn’t to cause suffering or seek discomfort. What we’re pursuing during Lent is friendship and closeness with Jesus. When fasting, a good thing to do when you get the urge to take something you’ve promised not to is to use that nudge as a reminder to pray. This way it reminds me that we are truly dependent on God and helps us to live into that relationship with God.
