What is your experience of mercy? When have you received it? Do you allow yourself to receive it? In a very famous painting of the Prodigal Son painted by Rembrandt, the son is clearly at the end of a long, hard journey; he’s missing a shoe, and he’s dirty and haggard. Some of our spiritual journeys may feel similar, especially if we’ve been away from the Sacrament of Reconciliation for a long time. If you’re struggling to find your way to God because it feels impossible, know that even the smallest opening in your heart towards God’s mercy is enough for God to do wonderous things in you. When you come to know that God forgives you, how will you meet God’s embrace?
