Scene 10 – The Heart of the City
The Three Kings venture to Daley Center Plaza, expecting to find it bustling with the energy of a marketplace, but this year they find the Picasso looking lonely in the empty square. Has Christmas been cancelled?
Of course not! The pandemic has changed many of our familiar and beloved rituals, including gathering together as family and community to celebrate together, but these men are wise, and they know that the true meaning of Christmas is love. The Christ child that they seek brought a message of peace, compassion, and love for humanity. These wanderers from afar know that the measure of Christmas isn’t an empty square, but a full heart. The heart of the city, the heart that really matters, is the love of God in our own fragile human hearts.
As they travel around Chicago on this day of celebration, they hear a message that breaks through social distancing, cohorts, and mask-wearing: For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.
Merry Christmas!
May God bless you this Christmas Day and fill your heart with peace, compassion, and love.
