Pre-K / Junior K
General
The out of bounds rule will be enforced. Coaches, stop play when the ball goes out of bounds and give the ball to the team that did not knock it out of bounds.
This is an Instructional League. These rules are meant as guidelines for each team to follow. They have been compiled using the experiences we have seen over the years. Use your best judgment as coaches to ensure good sportsmanship, a safe atmosphere and most importantly a fun time for the children.
Offense
Coaches, try to encourage the following as best as you can:
- Dribble the ball. One handed dribbling is encouraged, but two handed dribbling is fine too.
- Pass the ball. Encourage your players to pass the ball at least once during each possession.
- Allow every player the opportunity to bring the ball up the court. Encourage dribbling up the court.
- Try as best as possible to get every player at least one shot per half.
Rebounds are to be played as normal. If your player rebounds the ball and heads up court with it, encourage the dribble versus running up the court.
Defense
All defenders will defend INSIDE the established black line. The players will be allowed to extend their arms straight up or sideways to defend. They will be allowed to move within the black lines while defending.
Players will NOT be allowed to do the following:
- Jump up and block shots or steal the ball.
- Turnovers however, i.e., bad pass, lose the ball while dribbling are ok. Coaches, use your best judgment when it comes to turnovers. In other words, blatant turnovers are just that, turnovers. Accidental mistakes are YOUR call. We want the kids to have fun and enjoy themselves.
- Any type of physical contact, i.e. grabbing, pushing, or bumping will not be allowed.
- Any violation of these rules will result in the ball being given back to the offense.

Offense
Coaches, follow and adhere to these rules as best as you can.
- Dribble the ball. We want the kids to learn to dribble with the ball, not run with the ball. If a player is running with the ball, stop him or her, instruct them to dribble with the ball and let play continue.
- Pass the ball. Passing the basketball is the key to getting everyone involved. At least one pass should be made during each possession. Encourage more if possible.
- Allow every player the opportunity to bring the ball up the court. Instruct your players to dribble the ball.
- Try as best as possible to get every player at least one shot per half.
Rebounds are to be played as normal. If your player rebounds the ball and heads up court with it, the player must dribble the ball up the court. Fast breaks are allowed as long as the player dribbles the ball.
