In this well-known Gospel passage, Jesus is clear about children’s dignity and how they belong in the kingdom of God. In fact, they don’t just belong in the kingdom: the kingdom, Jesus says belongs to them. It is hard to go to Mass as a family and integrate faith into daily life, especially with little children. If we’re honest, we may sometimes wonder if it is even worth it. But, Jesus is saying that little children have a natural disposition toward receiving his promise, his gift of life. No one is too young to follow the Lord; we can all learn to model the childlike trust, honesty and sense of wonder that opens young children to receive the kingdom of God in faith.
