Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way. Into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this household." Luke 10:4-5

Pastoral Letter by Deacon Mark Purdome

Our lives should be deliberate examples of being Christian.”

Earlier this year we moved into a new condo, and now we are able to see the sunrise. Welcoming the sun has become a bit of a spiritual practice for my wife, Bridget, and she's been getting up early every morning and taking a picture as the sun comes up over the horizon. On a theoretical level, we know that the sun moves in the sky, but this practice has really demonstrated just how much the sun moves. We've watched it progress across the morning sky, moving north as we approached the solstice, and now the sun will start marching south again as we head toward fall. It is much more dramatic than we had anticipated!

All of life is movement, either toward something or away from something. We never want to be stagnant, stuck in one place. But like the sun's movement in the sky, we want our movement to be deliberate. You've known people, I'm sure, who are always busy but never get anything done. Or people who seem to move at random, caught up in the latest trend, but not having any destination in mind.

In other words, we want our movement to be intentional. And that intentional movement should bring us closer to Jesus.

In my life, this is a daily challenge. I try to be intentional about my activities - being present to them, thinking about their meaning - as I go about daily life. I've found that even the most mundane parts of my life are somehow made a little better by doing them with purpose, but it still takes daily reminders to myself to see things in that light.

The end goal of this notion of deliberate movement is to remain true to our values, true to what matters to us, and move forward down a path that turns us into witnesses of the Kingdom of God. St. John Paul II stated that a modern person listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if they do listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.

Just like the location of the sunrise has given a powerful, real-life example of how the sun moves deliberately in the morning sky, so our lives should be deliberate examples of being Christian, serving one another in the same way that Jesus taught his disciples.
